What are we trying to do?

Preserving Prairie Environments

The North American Buffalo Range is a non-profit organization committed to the conservation and protection of prairie ecosystems across North America. We strive to safeguard prairie habitats and wildlife by improving knowledge and appreciation of these vital landscapes. Citizen science and community engagement are key to preserving wild places and we invite you to join us in whatever way you can.

Let's do this together. It'll be fun!

Our Projects

Kestrel Nest Monitoring

Kestrel Nest Monitoring

Kestrel Nest Monitoring

Since 2023, we've been building, installing, and monitoring kestrel nest boxes in South-Central Colorado. We collaborate with the Peregrine Fund and Cornell University by submitting our data to their ongoing kestrel studies. To date, our boxes have produced 15 live kestrel chicks and, using remote cameras, we've accumulated a lot of interesting information about nesting and feeding behaviors.

Den Project

Kestrel Nest Monitoring

Kestrel Nest Monitoring

We are in the process of building an artificial den on a property in South-Central Colorado where predatory species, such as badgers, bobcats, fox, and/or coyotes, can den and raise their young in peace and without threat from anti-predator hunters or landowners. We plan to use cameras to monitor the den activity and bring it to you on our YouTube channel! We've already had a badger visit and it's an entertaining video!

Camera Trapping Surveys

Camera Trapping Surveys

Our director owns an isolated parcel of land in South-Central Colorado and wants his land to be a safe-haven for all types of prairie and mountain wildlife, we are conducting an extensive camera trapping survey on this property to learn more about what animals are using the habitat. So far, we've documented coyotes, fox, bobcat, deer, elk, roadrunners, rabbits, and a whole host of other cool wild animals. Camera trapping is something you can do in your own backyard to discover what visits your house when you're not looking!
